Samsung is the king in
mobile sales shipping more than 30 million units in this past third quarter,
crushing the competition and making the saying "Yes We Can" the
mantra for their mobile department. Although Samsung could and pushed through
to the winner's circle, one key person in their arsenal believes that it still
has a long way to go. Young, Sohn who was hired in August as the Chief Strategy
Officer (CSO) still claims that "our devices need to work better
together" in an article with the Huffington Post earlier tonight.
According to HP "Sohn revealed to Tech Review that he was an Apple gadget user long before he joined the South Korea-based electronics giant. “At work I’m using Samsung devices; Apple at home, mainly because all of my systems and files are done that way," said Sohn. "That’s sticky, you know? However, I did figure out how to sync all of my contacts and all of my schedules between the two different systems. You can do it. It’s a bit of work, but it is possible."
Who would've thought that
someone from Samsung would openly admit on using both products? To me it is
like you work for a mobile company (Sprint) and at home you use Verizon because
they offer better coverage; it's a conflict of interest in the eyes of
consumers, but apparently Sohn does not mind. Later in an Engadget interview it
stated that "While he's proud of the hardware in isolation, he believes a truly unified
ecosystem is "really critical" in the long term. He sees Apple as
ahead in this area, although he's arguing for an open approach instead of
keeping everything in-house like they do in Cupertino.”
Partly to
that end, the recently hired CSO is based in Menlo Park, not Seoul -- a step
that should spot valuable technology early on and coordinate with San Francisco
Bay Area startups that are big on the cloud, mobile platforms and other areas
that compliment Samsung's plans. We don't know how long it will take before our Galaxy S III is in
effortless sync with a similarly-branded TV, but it's good to know their mutual
creator won't be resting on its laurels.
